As the 25th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide looms on the horizon, Albright College’s World Affairs Club offers a free and open discussion about “Reflections on the Legacy of the Rwandan Genocide: International Laws, International Relations and the Continuing Struggle to Say Never Again,” March 26 at 4:30 p.m., in room 235 of Albright’s Center for the Arts.
From three different angles, Albright presenters will examine efforts to prevent genocide and protect vulnerable populations around the globe.
Irene Langran, Ph.D., associate professor of political science will discuss the legal meaning of the word “genocide” relevant international laws and how genocide in Rwanda and elsewhere in the 1990s led to the creation of international institutions to address genocide and other human rights atrocities.
Amanda Hornberger coordinator of the college’s Lakin Holocaust Library & Resource Center will focus on antisemitism and hate crimes in the U.S., and will explain how the Anti-Defamation League is working to promote understanding and awareness to secure justice and fair treatment for all.
Adam John, Ph.D., associate professor of French and Spanish will address the impact of the Rwandan genocide on the humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and on diplomatic relations between Rwanda and France.
“As we grapple with the ongoing challenges to declare with certainty ‘never again’ on a global scale, it is important to continue educating about obstacles faced and overcome, especially within the context of Albright’s efforts to create a thriving inclusive and equitable community,” explained John.
