Middle East expert Avi Melamed will lead the 44th annual Leo Camp memorial lecture “How Did We Get Here? Tracing the Path to the Present in the Middle East.” on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 7:30 p.m., in the Albright College McMillan Center, south lounge. Sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Reading/Berks, the 2024 lecture is free and open to the public.

The Middle East is a link of chains. What happens in one area impacts what happens in another? This lecture will take attendees beyond the headlines and behind the scenes for a comprehensive and holistic understanding of the layers of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in the hope of advancing a constructive, productive and sustainable framework that can improve the lives of Israelis and Palestinians.

Avi Melamed is a distinguished geopolitical Middle East expert, intelligence analyst, author, educator, and founder and CEO of Inside the Middle East Intelligence Perspectives. He is the author of three books on the Middle East (most recently in 2022) and a commentator and analyst for a variety of media platforms, including the narrator of the “Seamline Series.” A former Israeli intelligence official and senior advisor on Arab affairs, Melamed is fluent in Arabic, English and Hebrew and is recognized for his profound understanding of current affairs in the Arab and Muslim world and their implications on Israel and the broader Middle East.

The Jewish Federation of Reading/Berks is the planning, coordinating and fundraising arm of the local Jewish community. The federation raises and allocates funds in support of many vital national and international Jewish organizations. The organization also publishes Jewish media, hosts leadership programs and trips to Israel.
