Two AmeriCorps*VISTA projects have launched this summer, using Albright College’s 13th Street Partnership and Total Experience Learning® to positively impact at-risk K-12 students.

Cary Shurtz ’23 of Telford, Pa., is using a full year VISTA to integrate Total Experience Learning methodology into Albright’s 13th Street Partnership programming. Through the work of student and faculty volunteers, the 13th Street partnership supports underserved, at-risk students, with emphasis on the English Language Learners in the Reading School District through tutoring, mentoring and academic enrichment. Shurtz completed her Albright bachelor’s degree in art and English in May and plans to finish her master’s degree and art education teaching certificate in a single year, through the college’s 4+1 Graduate Program in Education program.

Lizaura Baez Trinidad of Riverside, N.J. is serving a 10-week Summer Associate VISTA term, supporting English Language Learners who are taking part in the Total Experience Learning summer program. Following her senior year of college at Albright, Baez plans to pursue a career as an ESL teacher.
