Albright College President, Jacquelyn S. Fetrow, Ph.D. ’82, will be honored at the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania’s (GSEP) annual Take the Lead program, April 6. A premier fundraising event for the Girl Scouts council, Take the Lead is a unique leadership program that fosters mentorship with distinguished women leaders from the community whose work and achievements make the world a better place.
Through the Take the Lead program, high school-aged Girl Scouts shadow inspiring women leaders from the Greater Philadelphia, Berks County, and Lehigh Valley area to gain valuable insight into their careers and help them jumpstart their professional networks.
A former Girl Scout, Fetrow is an accomplished higher education administrator and award-winning teacher who is widely published in computational biology.
“Our 2021 Take the Lead honorees have changed the world for the better, and serve as incredible role models for our girls,” said Kim E. Fraites-Dow, chief executive officer of GSEP.
“As a former Girl Scout, I remember the inspiring, influential female role models whose courage, character and confidence I aspired to,” said Fetrow. “These women, some of whom I met as an undergraduate student at Albright College, made a difference in my life and in my life’s journey. They helped me to become the leader I am today. I could not be more delighted and honored to serve in that role for today’s young women.”
This year, 13 Girl Scouts across nine counties were selected by the council to be paired with Take the Lead honorees.
“Our Girl Scouts, as they always are, will be the stars of the show serving as hosts and presenters of awards to our fantastic honorees, with whom they form relationships through significant mentoring and training events,” said Fraites-Dow. “Each Take the Lead honoree inspires the girls and other attendees to serve our community with courage, confidence and character, and to take action individually and collectively to make the world a better place.”
In addition to Fetrow, Berks County honorees include Georgeadis Setley Attorney, Susan Denaro; Reading School District Communications Director, Kristin Boyd Edwards; and Debra Powell, M.D., chief of the infectious diseases division at Tower Health Reading Hospital.
Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania serves close to 40,000 girls in partnership with more than 15,000 volunteers in Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh, Montgomery, Northampton and Philadelphia counties. Today, 80% of women in leadership and executive roles in the U.S. were Girl Scouts. Girl Scout alums comprise 70% of women in the U.S. Congress.
