Middle school students in the Reading School District will visit Albright College next week to get a taste of college life and an understanding that higher education is within their grasp.
Over two days – January 9 and 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. – a total of 432 seventh-graders from Northeast Middle School will travel the short distance up 13th Street to visit Albright. The students will take a couple of their regularly scheduled classes in Albright’s academic buildings, eat lunch in the College’s dining hall, tour campus, and meet with Albright students – including those who graduated from the Reading district – to ask questions about college life.
“We hope that by offering the seventh graders a fun day on Albright’s campus, they might be able to visualize themselves attending college one day,” said Karen Evans, assistant dean of experiential learning and director of career development. “Many of these children tell their teachers that they can’t go to college, but they can! By interacting with our students, not just on one day, but throughout the year through our partnership activities, we hope they will understand that education beyond middle school and high school is attainable.”
This event began last year as a result of the 13th Street Educational Partnership, a collaborative effort between Albright College, Northeast Middle School, and 13th and Union Elementary School aimed at strengthening educational opportunities and pathways for students in Reading.
