Albright adds sport management to business degree

Albright College has named sport management as a new track, available through its robust bachelor’s degree in business administration program. Five other tracks in the program include business economics, finance, international business, management and marketing. The college also offers an interdisciplinary major in accounting, economics and finance with tracks that focus on accounting or financial analysis.
Richard P. Schott, MBA, senior instructor of economics and business at Albright, points to the more than 30 percent of Albright students who dedicate countless hours on Albright’s fields, courts, track and pool as varsity athletes.
“Passion for athletics does not have to end,” said Schott. “Knowledge of the sports industry enables students to pursue a commercial interest in athletics. At Albright, they’ll learn to think critically about the industry, make effective decisions and collaborate with people of like experience around the world.”
The sport management field is a $200 billion dollar a year industry in the United States alone. Majoring in business with a track in sport management prepares students for the diverse opportunities available in this industry, which is projected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics to grow faster than average.
Because today’s sporting industry market has exceptionally-varied of employee skill needs — from collective bargaining to sponsorship and from licensing to public-private partnerships — sport management graduates should be prepared to apply business skills as managers, promoters, agents, scouts and more.
Albright business students begin their business coursework in their first college year. Core courses range from accounting, economics, statistics and finance to management, marketing, information systems and business strategy. And the college’s faculty work one-on-one with students to identify career paths, prepare for the job search process and chart long-term professional development. Along the way, Albright graduates also develop key interpersonal abilities, adaptability and communication skills.
